2023 ‘Understanding Islam’ Series Being Held in Bird Library

Muslim Student Life, Hendricks Chapel and the Muslim Students Association are hosting a six-week lecture and discussion series titled “Understanding Islam” beginning  Tuesday, Jan. 31, through Tuesday, March 7, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. in Bird Library, Peter Graham Scholarly Commons Room 114.

The series will cover the fundamentals of Islam, the diversity of its followers, understanding of the five daily prayers and the importance of their accommodation for practicing Muslims, Ramadan observance and accommodations and Islamic holidays. The last session will offer a guided visit to a Syracuse mosque.

The series will help faculty, staff, the broader public and students better understand Islam and Muslims. It will also enable administrators and faculty to better accommodate their Muslim students.

The series is also suitable for Muslim students to refresh their knowledge about Islam and gain additional insights about it through assigned readings and learn more about their Muslim peers who may have different backgrounds and ways of practicing Islam.

All participants who meet the expected requirements will be awarded a certificate of completion at the end of the series.

The program is facilitated by Imam Amir Duric, Muslim chaplain at Syracuse University, and is free and open to the public. Registration and accommodation requests should be made by Jan. 29.
